NJ Boating Requirements

November 12, 2009

I want to distinquish between the two different boating requirements in the great state of New Jersey. First, there is the NJ Boat License, a function of the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission. This is largely a revenue-generating hastle that can be handled with a form and a fee at any NJMVC centers. The second is the NJ Boating Safety Certificate. This has much more meaning because it requires a class and a test and is designed to make you a better citizen of the water.

New Jersey Boat License

You need a NJ Boat License to operate any motorized boat (incuding sailboats with motors) on non-tidal bodies of water in NJ. To get a boat license (from any NJMVC center), you need a Boating Safety Certificate.

NJ Boating Safety Certificate

You need a Boating Safety Certificate from a NJ State Police approved program to operate any motorized boat (including sailboats with motors) in tidal and non-tidal bodies of water according to the following schedule:

  • If you were born after 1969…June 1, 2006
  • If you were born 1959-1968…June 1, 2007
  • If you were born 1949-1958…June 1, 2008
  • If you were born before 1948…June 1, 2009

Out of state residents are not exempt from the requirement. NJ will honor a Boating Safety Certificate of another state if you are in New Jersey for less than 90 days.

A US Coast Guard Captain’s License is sufficient to meet the Boating Safety Certificate requirement.

For more information, please visit the NJ State Police website at http://njsp.org/maritime/faq.html.
